The competitive side of Fortnite is about to experience a much-needed overhaul as Ranked 2.0 is about to experience a much-needed overhaul. In this piece, we break down some of the changes and the expected impact to the future of Fortnite.
The Rankle Update
Epic Games has introduced a ranked system in 2023, which is now in its best form, having to evolve through the years. The range of ranks aims to uniformly distribute the players. The ranks are as follows: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, Champion, and the Unreal rank.
HYPEX, a Fortnite influencer has, however, stated that there is a ranked update system being developed that is being dubbed Rank 2.0. Up to this point, the details have been kept a secret, but the 2.0 suggests that there is going to be a complete overhaul as opposed to a simple update. These changes could likely center on a shift in the matchmaking algorithms, rank progression mechanics, new tiers, and even the visual redesign of the competitive interface.
The Current Ranked System: A Foundation for 2.0
Before looking ahead, we need to cover the current system. In Fortnite, ranked modes are playable within the standard Battle Royale (Solo, Duos, Squads) and Zero Build (Duos) playlists. The progression system centers around a hidden MMR and considers eliminations, placement, overall consistency, and team contribution .
š„ The Ranks: Players start at Bronze and make their way through Ranks, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Diamond, each having 3 subdivisions. The Elite, Champion, and Unreal tiers are in a class of their own. Getting to the Unreal rank is a coveted achievement as it allows players to sit on the global leaderboard for the rest of the season without the risk of demotion, as well as being the protected rank.
āļø Matchmaking: SBMM (Skill Based Matchmaking) is active at all times. The lower Bronze-Gold ranks are designated as learning tiers, while the Platinum-Diamond ranks are fiercely contested. The Elite and Unreal ranks are reserved for the best players in the game, including professionals and streamers.
š Rewards: Players receive the finest seasonal cosmetics, including back blings, pickaxes, wraps, and profile banners. Players are recognized for the effort they put in to obtain the highest rank as they receive these items.
Ranked 2.0 is the first Epic Games have ventured into competitive features, and while there is hardly any detail on the changes one can speculate what competitive Fortnite is going to look like.

What changes? What improvements?

Areas like, Progression Clarity would enable players to have better fulfillment and feasibility systems Mastered Match would employ systems to better empirically measure smurfing within the competitive sphere of the game.
Reset Mechanics are meant to re-engineer competitive Fortnite to be polished with every season and keep the spirit of competition alive. The spirit amoung players is not just polished in how the game is played, but in the social network as well.
